Prayer for New Beginners LESSON 2: Learning the Pattern of Prayer
1.Truth to Remember
Jesus teaches us a simple pattern for prayer: praise God, pray for others, ask for needs, confess sin, and ask for protection.
2.Connection to Life
Brothers and sisters, many new believers want to pray, but they do not know what to include.
Some ask, "Should I only ask God for help?" Others ask, "What else should I pray about?"
Jesus gave us a pattern to guide our prayers.
3.What the Bible Says
Matthew 6:9–13; Luke 11:1–4
Jesus taught His disciples what we call the Lord's Prayer.
This prayer teaches us how to come to God as our Father, honor His name, ask for His will, ask for daily needs, ask for forgiveness, and ask for help against temptation.
4.What This Means
First, prayer begins with God.
We praise God for who He is. This is called adoration. We remember that God is holy, good, powerful, loving, faithful, and wise.
Second, prayer includes the needs of others and our own needs.
We pray for other people, our family, our church, our community, and people who are suffering. This is called intercession. We also ask God for daily needs like food, strength, wisdom, work, healing, and help. This is called supplication.
Third, prayer includes confession.
Confession means we tell God what we have done wrong and ask for His forgiveness. We come to Him with honesty and humility.
Fourth, prayer includes asking for protection.
We ask God to help us when we face temptation. We ask Him to keep us from sin and help us overcome evil.
5.A Story to Remember
Imagine a new believer who wants to pray but feels confused.
His pastor teaches him five simple words: praise, others, needs, forgiveness, protection.
So he prays, "Father, You are good. Help my family. Provide our food. Forgive my sin. Help me say no to temptation."
Now he has a simple pattern to follow.
6.How to Apply This Lesson
Use the Lord's Prayer as your guide.
When you pray, remember these five parts: praise God, pray for others, ask for your needs, confess your sin, and ask for protection.
This simple pattern can help you pray with more balance and confidence.
7.Respond and Pray
Which part of prayer do you need to practice more: praise, praying for others, asking for needs, confession, or protection?
Prayer: Father, teach us to pray as Jesus taught His disciples. Help us praise You, pray for others, ask for our needs, confess our sins, and depend on Your protection each day. In Jesus' name, amen.
