Prayer for New Beginners LESSON 1: Understanding Prayer

Study Guide · Luke 11:1 · October 2, 2026

1.Truth to Remember

Prayer is talking with God, and we learn to pray by praying.

2.Connection to Life

Brothers and sisters, when a child learns to talk, the child starts with simple words.

At first, the child does not speak perfectly. But the child learns by talking every day.

Prayer is like that. We grow in prayer by praying.

3.What the Bible Says

Luke 11:1

One day, Jesus was praying. When He finished, one of His disciples said, "Lord, teach us to pray."

This shows us that even the disciples of Jesus needed to learn how to pray. So new believers should not feel ashamed if they also need to learn.

4.What This Means

First, prayer is talking with God.

Just as we talk to other people, we can talk to the Lord. We do not need impressive words. We can come to God honestly from the heart.

Second, prayer is simple, but it is also very important.

Even a child can pray. A new believer can pray. But prayer is also fellowship with God. When we pray, we come near to the living God.

Third, prayer should be clear, daily, and sincere.

We can tell God what we need. We should come to Him every day, not only when we have problems. We should pray with a humble heart that wants to follow Him.

Fourth, it is normal to struggle in prayer.

Sometimes we do not know what to pray. Sometimes we do not know the right words. Sometimes our faith feels weak. These struggles are normal. We can still say, "Lord, teach me to pray."

5.A Story to Remember

Imagine a new believer in a small church.

During prayer time, he feels shy. He thinks, "I do not know beautiful words."

But his pastor says, "Just talk to God like a child talking to a loving father."

So he prays, "Lord, thank You. Please help me follow You today."

That simple prayer is heard by God.

6.How to Apply This Lesson

Begin with simple words.

Pray every day, even for a short time.

Tell God your needs. Thank Him for His care. Ask Him to forgive you. Ask Him to strengthen your faith.

Do not wait until you know many words. Start praying today.

7.Respond and Pray

What simple prayer can you bring to God today?

Prayer: Father, thank You that we can come to You in prayer. Teach us to pray clearly, daily, and sincerely as Your children. In Jesus' name, amen.
