Christian Approaches to Hardship LESSON 2: Ask God to Search Your Heart

When hard times come, ask God to search your heart and guide you in the right way.

2.Connection to Life

Brothers and sisters, when a motorcycle suddenly stops on the road, the rider checks what happened.

Is there still gasoline? Is the tire flat? Is the engine too hot?

He does not only blame the road.

In the same way, when life becomes hard, we should also come before God and check our hearts.

3.What the Bible Says

Psalm 139:23–24 says, "Search me, O God, and know my heart."

The writer is asking God, "Lord, show me if there is anything wrong in me. Lead me in the right way."

4.What This Means

First, not all suffering comes from personal sin.

Sometimes we suffer because we live in a broken world. People get sick. Work fails. Loved ones die. Even good people suffer.

Jesus suffered, but He never sinned. So we should not quickly say, "That person is suffering because he sinned."

Second, some suffering may come from wrong choices.

If we are dishonest, proud, lazy, angry, immoral, or careless, painful results may come. Sometimes God uses hardship to open our eyes.

Third, checking our heart is not the same as losing hope.

God does not ask us to check our hearts so we will feel condemned. He invites us to come back to Him, confess our sin, receive forgiveness, and walk wisely.

5.A Story to Remember

A pastor saw many problems in his ministry.

At first, he blamed the members. He said, "They are hard to lead."

But later, he prayed, "Lord, search my heart."

God showed him that he often spoke harshly. He was quick to correct, but slow to listen.

So he asked forgiveness and became more gentle.

The problem became a doorway to growth.

6.What We Should Do

When hardship comes, ask simple questions.

Is there sin I need to confess?

Is there a habit I need to stop?

Is there someone I need to forgive?

Is there a wise step I need to take?

Brothers and sisters, do not hide from God. His correction is part of His love.

7.Respond and Pray

Today, ask God to search your heart. If He shows you something, respond with humility. Come back to Him.

Lord, search our hearts and show us anything that dishonors You. Help us confess our sin, receive Your grace, and walk in wisdom as You lead us in the right way. In Jesus' name, amen.
