Christian Approaches to Hardship LESSON 1: Trust God in Hard Times

Study Guide · James 1:2–4 · September 29, 2026

1.Truth to Remember

Hardship is painful, but God can use it to help us grow as followers of Jesus.

2.Connection to Life

Brothers and sisters, sometimes we think, "If I follow Jesus, life should become easy."

But many faithful Christians still face sickness, family problems, money problems, and ministry pressure.

So when hardship comes, we may ask, "Lord, why is this happening to me?"

The Bible helps us see hardship in the right way.

3.What the Bible Says

James 1:2–4 says that when we face trials, our faith is tested. This testing produces perseverance. And perseverance helps us become mature and complete.

This means God can use hard times to help us grow.

4.What This Means

First, hard times are part of the Christian life.

Following Jesus does not mean we will never suffer. Jesus Himself suffered. His apostles suffered. Many faithful believers also suffered.

So when hardship comes, we should not say, "Maybe God has left me." No. Sometimes hardship is part of discipleship.

Second, joy in hardship does not mean fake smiling.

The Bible does not tell us to pretend that pain is not painful. True joy means we trust God's character. We believe God is good, wise, and faithful, even when life is hard.

Third, God can use hardship for a good purpose.

God can build patience in us. He can remove pride. He can teach us to pray more deeply. He can help us depend on Him, not only on our own strength.

Hardship is painful, but in God's hands, it is not wasted.

5.A Story to Remember

A farmer plants seed in muddy soil. For many days, he sees nothing. The field looks empty. But under the ground, the seed is growing.

In the same way, when we suffer, we may not see what God is doing. But God may be growing faith, patience, humility, and hope inside us.

6.What We Should Do

When hardship comes, do not only ask, "Lord, remove this problem."

Also ask, "Lord, what are You teaching me?"

Keep praying. Keep obeying. Keep serving. Keep trusting God's goodness.

Your pain is real. But God's work in you is also real.

7.Respond and Pray

Bring your hardship before God today. Ask God to help you trust Him in this hardship.

Lord, our hardship is painful, but we trust You. Help us grow in faith, patience, and hope, and use our trials to make us more like Jesus. Amen.
