Christian Approaches to Hardship LESSON 5: Keep Trusting God in Hard Times
1.Truth to Remember
When suffering is hard to understand, run to God and stay faithful to Him.
2.Connection to Life
Brothers and sisters, sometimes life feels unfair.
A faithful pastor becomes sick. A hardworking family loses income. A good person is treated badly.
Then we ask, "Lord, why is this happening?"
It is not wrong to ask why. God hears our questions. But if we only keep asking why, our hearts can become tired, angry, and bitter.
So the Bible teaches us another question: "Lord, how can I honor You in this pain?"
3.What the Bible Says
Job suffered very deeply. He lost his children, his health, and his possessions.
He did not understand everything that was happening.
But in Job 13:15, Job said, "Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him."
Even in deep pain, Job chose to keep trusting God.
4.What This Means
First, we may not always know why suffering happens.
Some pain comes because we live in a broken world. Some pain comes from the sin of other people. Some pain is allowed by God for reasons we cannot yet see.
Second, we must run to God as our refuge.
A refuge is a safe place. When a strong storm comes, people look for shelter. In suffering, we run to God through prayer, His Word, worship, and the help of His people.
Third, we must act in a way that honors God.
This means we ask, "How can I please God in this painful situation?"
We do not repay evil with evil. We do not stop obeying God. We continue to love, serve, forgive, and trust Him.
5.A Story to Remember
A church planter was falsely accused by a neighbor.
He felt hurt and angry. At first, he wanted to answer with harsh words.
But he prayed, "Lord, help me honor You."
So he spoke gently. He continued serving. He refused revenge.
Later, people saw his patience and respected his testimony.
6.What We Should Do
When you suffer unfairly, bring your pain to God.
Do not let bitterness control your heart.
Ask, "Lord, what faithful step can I take today?"
Maybe you need to pray. Maybe you need to forgive. Maybe you need to rest. Maybe you need to ask for counsel. Maybe you need to continue serving. Maybe you need to speak the truth with humility.
Stay loyal to God, even when the road is painful.
7.Respond and Pray
Today, ask God to help you honor Him in your pain. Take one faithful step today. Pray, forgive, rest, ask for help, or keep serving God.
Lord, sometimes we do not understand our suffering, but help us run to You as our refuge. Protect our hearts from bitterness, and teach us to stay faithful, humble, and obedient as we honor You in our pain. In Jesus' name, amen.
